My AVG 8 Free Edition virus update has not been working since yesterday. After connecting to the update server, an “Invalid Control CTF File” error always pops out. At first I though there must be some errors in the update files in AVG’s server. This afternoon, I was able to update my notebook’s AVG without encountering this error. And tonight I tried updating AVG again and I still got last night’s error. Convinced that the error is not cause by the files in AVG server, I Googled about the problem and thanks to this blog, I was able to solve the problem.
To summarize the things I did,
- You need to make sure that you can view hidden files. To do this, open My Computer and click on Tools then Folder Options. Click on the View tab and select the “Show hidden files and folders” option.
- Go to the AVG download folder which is usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download.
- Delete all .ctf files.
- Update your AVG again and the update should be successful!!!
